BOWLING MEMBERSHIP
INTERESTED IN BECOMING A BOWLING MEMBER?
In 2024 the bowling season runs from Sunday 21 April to Sunday 22 September.
We offer free introductory 'coaching' sessions to anybody who wants them. Most newcomers soon join our regular mixed roll-up sessions where there are always fellow members willing to offer support. We have some bowls at the Club which can be used by new bowlers whilst they gauge the right size and weight for their personal needs. One of our members is a qualified England Bowls Coach who is willing to offer his services to new bowlers.
At the roll-ups, teams are drawn at random, so everybody mixes with others. Roll-ups last about an hour and a half and take place on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons from 2pm, plus Thursdays from 5.30pm. Tuesday afternoons are set aside for our ladies. On Sundays we always finish with tea and biscuits inside the hall. We also play friendly and league matches against other Clubs and arrange some internal tournaments. Bowls Club members receive programme details before the season starts.
There are two payment options, both of which include the £18 Club membership fee and benefits.
1. You can pay the bowling membership fee of £55.00 and then pay £2.00 each time you play.
2. Avoid having to pay the £2.00 per game by paying a bowling membership fee of £95.00, the additional £40 being a one-off annual payment to cover the entire season.
Patteson Bowls Section
For New Members/Bowlers and to refresh existing Bowlers
Welcome to Patteson Outdoor Bowls (April to September)
Who are we?
We are the Bowling section of the Patteson Social Club. We describe ourselves as social bowlers who play in regular rollups and also play friendly matches at home and away throughout the season. We also play in the Age Concern afternoon league for over 55s.
When do we meet up?
We have mixed (ladies and men) “roll ups” every Wednesday at 2pm, every Thursday at 5.30pm and every Sunday at 2pm. Teams are drawn at random on the day.
We organise mixed internal triples competitions each year on 4 Sundays instead of the regular rollup and we also organise a pairs competition on one Thursday evening instead of that rollup.
There is no need to book rollups just turn up 15 minutes before start time and you will be drawn into a team. Sheets in the Bowls Pavilion (shed) provide info on matches and tournaments.
What rules do we play to?
We play by English Federation rules which can be found in the bowls pavilion (also known as the shed)
In summary the jack is live if pushed into the ditch but all woods in the ditch are dead even if they are “touchers”.
We allow a minimum 19 metre cast of the jack rather 23 metres to cater for all levels (the Age Concern league follow this rule too)
Any bowl more than 2 metres away from the jack is a non-counter.
Who can join us?
We welcome any Patteson Member of any ability, and we provide, free of charge, bowls if you are not sure that you will take up this sport. Rink fees apply which can be found on the website.
What to wear?
Wear whatever you feel comfortable in, there is no dress code for rollups and internal tournaments. Please wear the flattest shoes you have to protect the grass.
Competitions against other clubs we ask that you wear white tops and grey trousers/shorts/skirts – we have a club logo which can be embroidered on your own top at a minimal cost.
Ladies only rollups
A few of our lady members prefer to bowl amongst themselves with a shorter length jack. If you would prefer a ladies only rink we have one rink reserved on a Tuesday at 2:00 PM. If you are interested please contact Angela Andrews on 01603 451753 for further details.
Our Bowls schedule
In the outside shed we have notices summarising all events. We also post match sheets for members to sign up for matches and competitions. We ensure everyone who wants to play (and sometimes those who do not think they want to play) gets a game.
New Bowlers assistance
For the newer players we have a qualified Bowls England coach (Jack Norton 07789261187) who for no cost will coach beginners up to a competency to be able to join in all rollups and matches and enjoy their game.
Alternatively, many of our experienced bowlers will help new bowlers.
Format of bowling and Team Roles
We try to play all our games as triples. That is two teams of 3 players, each bowling 3 woods.
The first person is called “The Lead”.
The 2nd player is called “No.2”.
The 3rd player is called “The skip”.
All will become clear when you play a game or two, but a summary on the following sheet will be a guide.
If we do not have the correct number of players for teams of 3 we play pairs or singles.
Triples Bowls roles and responsibilities
Lead or No.1
Positions the mat.
Cast (or roll) the jack to start the end. (Their skip centres the jack).
Rolls their 3 woods alternately with opposition No.1.
Then takes no more part in the game except for watching and applauding (Often said that the Lead player in Triple Bowls “puts up then shuts up!”) this does often prove difficult for some of our players.
When all the woods have been bowled and scored – the losing lead collects and tidies the bowls ready to start the next end. The winning lead lays the mat ready for the next end.
2nd or No .2
Rolls their 3 woods alternately with opposition No.2.
When they have finished rolling their 3 woods all 4 players (leads and no.2s) swap ends with the Skips or No.3 players
The No.2s then become “skips” for the No.3 Skips. See Skip duties below except for the jack cast.
When the end is complete, it is the role of No.2 on each team to agree how many woods the winning team has.
Any dispute as to which woods are closest, is resolved by using a bowls measure to determine which is closest. This is also a role of No.2. They then advise the skip of the score for the end by hand signals.
No.2 keeps the scoreboard up to date and when playing a match No.2. should fill in the scorecard.
Skip or No.3
The skip stands at the head (the far end where the jack and the bowls are bowled to) for the duration of Lead and No2s game.
They centre the jack when cast.
They guide their team by advising how short/long their woods are by hand signals.
They advise their team members as to how many woods they are leading or losing by using hand signals.
They may suggest what shot to play to a bowler on their team (the lead and No.2) before they bowl.
They move to the mat end when No.1s and No.2s have finished and roll their 3 woods alternatively with opposition Skip.
